Anna Prieboy (née Slamka), age 104, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, March 27, 2026 with family at her side. As a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, her life was a beautiful testament to her faith, devotion to her family, and the love in her heart.
Anna was born in the village of Sedliacka Dubova, Slovakia on March 19,1922 and immigrated to the United States in 1936 along with her mother, Johanna, and siblings to join their father, Peter Slamka, who had immigrated 7 years earlier to East Chicago, Indiana. Anna attended East Chicago Washington High School and developed an early work ethic serving breakfast at the family business, Pete’s Bar & Grill, to the steel mill workers arriving at 7:00 am after the night shift. As a young teenager, she enjoyed outings with her girlfriends to the nearby beaches of Lake Michigan and attending church and dance events. Anna was honored to serve as queen of the 1943 Slovak-American Catholic Day.
While attending a dance, Anna met her future husband, Joseph Prieboy, of Joliet, IL. They married on June 10, 1944 and celebrated 56 wonderful years of marriage building a beautiful life with their three sons in Joliet. She poured her heart into caring and serving family and friends. Anna enjoyed cooking, baking, canning, and was always ready to share a welcoming meal for guests who were assured never to leave hungry and without a tray of Slovak desserts.
Anna was a longtime parishioner of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Church and was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society as well as the Providence Catholic High School Mother’s Club. In addition, she was a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. She truly enjoyed the fellowship and lifelong friendships that were developed while serving in numerous church, school, sporting, and fundraising events.
Anna is survived by sons Joseph (Jean) and Mark (Colleen) along with grandchildren Joseph Jr. (Julie), Michelle, Audrey, Katelyn, and Jennifer; great-grandchildren Luc, Grace, and Benjamin, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Joseph Prieboy and son Thomas Prieboy; her parents Peter and Johanna (Dlholucky) Slamka; and siblings Joseph (June) Slamka, Mary (Edward) Mamrila, and Monica (James) Mika.
Visitation for Anna Prieboy will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with a Chapel prayer service scheduled at 5:00 pm, at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Rd, Joliet, IL.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 8th, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. Jude Catholic Church, 241 W Second Avenue, New Lenox, IL. Interment will follow at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery, 1860 Maple Rd, Joliet, IL.
