Anthony "Tony" Smrekar

February 22, 1937 — September 22, 2023

Anthony George “Tony” Smrekar, 86, of Lockport, passed away peacefully at home in the care of Lightways Hospice on Friday, September 22, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Born February 22, 1937, in Joliet, Tony was a son of Anton and Frances (Papesh) Smrekar. He was raised and educated in Lockport, graduating with the Lockport Township High School class of ‘54.  Following graduation, Tony proudly served in the United States Army.  He was honorably discharged and went on to work as a crew leader for Nicor Gas for 39 years until retirement.

Tony was an avid gardener who created an incredibly beautiful outdoor environment, which his family enjoyed for years.  He took great pride in his work and could repair or build anything.  He instilled a strong work ethic in his family, leading by example.  A dedicated family man; he was our solid foundation.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years: Janice (Novak); his daughters: Carolyn (Brandt) Randall, Patricia (Sean) Kelly and Janet (Richard) Slomka; as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Also surviving Tony are his siblings: Robert (Judy) Smrekar, Geraldine (the late Robert) Grivetti, Marianne (Jim) Kobe, (the late David) Judy Smrekar, Frances (Rick) Mutz, and their families.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Anton and Frances (Papesh) Smrekar, and brother: David Smrekar.

Per Tony’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.
