Channahon

Harold Joseph Cronin, 89, of Channahon, passed away peacefully at home on June 15th, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Lincoln, Illinois, Harold later moved to Joliet, where he built a life defined by family, friendship, hard work, and community. Known by many as Joe, he was a proud Army veteran, successful businessman, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend to many.

Alongside his beloved wife, Paula, Harold proudly owned and operated Sam’s Place for many years, creating more than just a neighborhood tavern—it was a gathering place where friendships were forged and countless memories were made. Affectionately known as “Sam” by generations of patrons, he became a familiar face and cherished friend to so many who walked through the doors. He also served as President of the Illinois Licensed Beverage Association (ILBA), a role he held with great pride and dedication.

After retirement, Harold found his greatest happiness at his home on the Kankakee River. Whether he was fishing, tending to his garden, sharing stories with friends, or enjoying a cold beer, he treasured the simple moments and the people who shared them with him. It was there, surrounded by family and friends, that his familiar phrase, “just one more,” became legendary—one more story, one more cast, one more beer, one more laugh. Those who knew him best lovingly nicknamed him “One More Joe,” a name that perfectly captured his appreciation for life and his desire to make every good moment last a little longer.

Harold was known for his generous heart, unwavering loyalty, and willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. His kindness, humor, and friendship touched countless lives and left an impression that will never be forgotten.

Harold and Paula shared 52 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, and family. He is survived by his loving wife, Paula; his children, Joe (Cindy) Cronin and Maria (Michael) Rios; his grandchildren, Connor, Kaelyn, and Michael; his sister, Virginia Pitts; many cousins, nieces, nephews; and his dearest friends Mike Boban and Dennis Roselle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Harold Cronin, and his sister, Mary Roy.

Harold leaves behind a legacy of kindness, friendship, and unconditional love. Though he will be deeply missed, the stories he shared, the lives he touched, and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

One more story. One more cast. One more beer. One more laugh. Forever our “One More Joe.”
