Helen C. Schwab (nee Matichak) 95, of Joliet, passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Born in 1929 to the late Andrew P. and Helen (nee Lorenc) Matichak, Helen was a lifelong resident of Joliet. She was the beloved wife of 58 years to the late Robert “Bud” Schwab, whom she lovingly called “my Schwabbie.”
Loving mother of Laura (Marc) Jeske, the late Jeffry (Karen) Schwab, Robyn (Michael) Wojciechowski, Greg (Patricia )Schwab and Sheryl and the late Jeff Erickson. Devoted grandmother of 11 and proud great-grandmother of 11.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband; Robert, son; Jeffry Schwab, parents; Andrew and Helen Matichak, two sisters, and two brothers, Frank and Andrew.
A faithful member of St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield for over 62 years, Helen dedicated countless hours volunteering at the 7:30 a.m. Sunday Mass on Sundays where so many were welcomed with her warm smile or hug and assisting at funerals. She was also active in the St. Mary’s Seniors, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, and the Council of Catholic Women and in 2018, she was honored as St. Mary’s “Woman of the Year.”
Helen often said, “My family is my biggest treasure.” She will be fondly remembered as a warm and compassionate woman who welcomed everyone with smiling eyes and open arms. She had an unconditional love that exemplified her truest self. For all the challenges she faced in life, she was the epitome of grace and strength.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet.
Friends are invited to join the family at St. Mary Immaculate Parish, 15629 Illinois Route 59, Plainfield, on Monday, November 17, 2025, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. Cremation rites will be accorded in accordance with her wishes.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that contributions in Helen’s name to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties.
