John W. Owen Sr., lovingly known as "Big John" "Papaw," and especially "Big Bear" passed away peacefully at home on June 25, 2026, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by the love of his family as he made his journey home.
John proudly served his country as a United States Army veteran, carrying the values of honor, dedication, and hard work throughout his life. While he was proud of his military service, his greatest pride was always his family.
John shared an extraordinary love story with the love of his life, Lucy. Together they enjoyed nearly 50 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their bond was one that everyone admired, and after Lucy's passing there was never a doubt that a piece of John's heart went with her. They were truly soulmates, and we find comfort knowing she was there to welcome him home with open arms.
John is survived by his son, John W. Owen Jr., and his wife, Michelle; his grandsons, John W. Owen III, Joseph M Owen, Brandon M Russell and his great-grandson, Adam, whom he affectionately called "Little Bear."
After retiring, John found joy in the simple things. You could often find him happily piddling around in his garage or riding his lawn tractor through the yard, taking pride in a perfectly cut lawn.
More than anything, John was a family man. His love was steady, unconditional, and unmistakable. His presence brought strength, comfort, and countless cherished memories.
Though our hearts are broken by his absence, we are grateful for every lesson, every laugh, every story, and every moment we were blessed to share with him. His love will remain with us always.
John is survived by one brother David Owen and one sister Shirley Mayberry. He is preceded in death by his parents A.E Owen and Lucenda (nee Wiley) Brothers Glendale, Wendell and Tommy Owen, George (Helen) Owen and Sisters Velma (Paul) Sittig, Frances (James) Cletcher, Margaret (Rod) Smith, Sue (Tommy) Cunningham, Judy Hatley and Patsy Owen.
Per John’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded. He will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife Lucy in Blue Ridge Georgia.
