Mary Vella-Chang

April 29, 1937 — September 27, 2025

Mary Vella-Chang, age 88, passed away at Willow Falls Senior Living under hospice care on Saturday, September 27, 2025 after a brief illness of dementia.

She is survived by her brother, Dominic (June) Vella; nephews, Dominic Jr. (Lory), Michael (Jill) Vella; aunt, Elda (the late John) Vella; many great and great-great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by her parents, Nicole and Candita (Caruso) Vella; grandparents, Basilo and Maria (Alberico) Caruso, Dominic and Maria (DiPietrantonio) Vella.

A proud graduate of Saint Francis Academy, she began her career at WGN in Chicago. Mary’s journey later took her to Jamaica, where she lived for 30 years. During her time there, she found immense joy in equestrian sports, especially competitive horse jumping. Her talent and determination earned her numerous titles, and she cherished the community and friendships built around the sport.

After returning home, Mary dedicated herself to helping others through physical therapy and eventually became self-employed as a massage therapist. She maintained an active lifestyle, visiting the gym daily, and brought comfort and care to many through her volunteer work at Lightways Hospice.

Mary also had a deep love for travel, visiting Europe to reconnect with family and friends. Despite her many adventures, her favorite place was always at home, surrounded by the people she loved.

Her life was full, generous, and beautifully lived. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Per Mary’s wishes cremation rites have been accorded. She will be laid to rest with her parents privately at St. Patrick Cemetery in Joliet at a later date.
