John Henry Hood

June 23, 1930 — November 21, 2022

John Henry Hood, age 92, went home to be with the Lord, on Monday, November 21, 2022.

John was born and raised on a rural farm in Franklin, Tennessee and was the second of 10 children.  He worked on the farm and at age 16 started working at Moorehead Tree Service in Nashville, Tennessee to help support his family. In the mid 50’s John moved to Illinois and began working for Fox Valley Tree Experts followed by Bergquist Tree Experts. In the late 60’s he worked as a union carpenter and later started his own business, Hood’s Landscaping and Tree Service.

He had a vast knowledge of nature and animals and enjoyed hunting and fishing. John always said “every day of fishing adds another day to your life,” guess he was right. His Grandpa Thornton taught him how to turtle hunt and John enjoyed showing his children and grandchildren how to fish. He always looked forward to poker night with the guys. John was a proud United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War.

John was a man who was always ready to help his family and friends in any way he could. Whether it was lending some good advice or having a good listening ear. He was the support needed to help you along in life. He loved Juicy Fruit Gum and every kid knew he always had some to share in his left shirt pocket.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Hardeman and Ada (Thornton) Hood; brothers, George, Spencer, Joel, Jimmy and Kinnard Hood; and sister, Frances E. Hood.

John is survived by his daughters, Adnellys “Nellie” (Frank) Bunzell, Yasmine (Dave) Purdey, Faith “Fay” Hood and Gloria “Gigi” Hood; grandchildren, Jason (Andrea) Bunzell, Jennifer Murawski and Adam Bunzell, Tana (Mark) Purdey, Sara Purdey and Colton John Hood; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Nathan and Matthew Bunzell, Tyler, Hunter and Jayden Murawski, Ryker Langford, Amelia and Maizy Orlando; great-great-grandchildren, Bradley, Adrianna and Aaron Murawski; sisters, Vertie Mai McCanless, Jessie Sue Bergquist and Bonnie Faye Mangrum; nephews, Josh (Lisa) McCanless, Daniel Mangrum and Sam Hood; and his constant companion Dodger, AKA Rat Dog.
