December 11, 1927 — September 18, 2021

Rosemary (Dernulc) Malarich

Born: December 11, 1927

Died: September 18, 2021

Age 93

Rose was born December 11, 1927 in Joliet, IL, the oldest daughter of Rudy and Jennie (Smolich) Dernulc.  Rose and her three sisters, Dorothy, Gloria and Lois were raised in Rockdale, IL. where Rose eventually attended Providence High School.  She met the love of her life, Ed Malarich, when he was stationed in the naval yards in Rockdale.  They married and moved to Ed’s home state of California where they started their family and lived for 8 years before returning to the Joliet area to be closer to Rose’s family.   They went on to raise their 4 daughters, Sandy, Barb, Vicki and Kathi in Crest Hill.  Rose was a traditional housewife of her generation; complete with having dinner on the table at 4:00 each night, having the Avon lady visit her on Friday mornings and visiting the beauty shop every Saturday morning…maintaining that trademark red hair took some work!  Once the girls were in school, she was a volunteer Lassies’ mom, spent some time working at the local Dog & Suds and eventually at Lockport High School as a lunch server. Their daughters grew up and had families and Rose & Ed earned their forever names, Grandma Rosie & Papa Eddie.

In earlier years, Rose enjoyed babysitting for and following her grandkids’ sports like most grandparents, but her love of sports also went much deeper -from her beloved Cubbies to the Bulls, the Blackhawks and the Bears, she could hold a conversation with the most avid sports fans and was knowledgeable about all “her” players and stats.  She liked a good competition (bowled on a competitive league for years) and she liked her casinos too but her biggest joys were the local bingo halls. Her bingo friends were like family and Grandma Rosie enjoyed the game even through her days at Sunny Hill.  She was also a lifelong member of St. Anne’s Church and looked forward to her post-mass Sunday morning breakfasts with family and friends. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Association. Grandma’s legacy includes MANY stories, sayings and memories of her that only her family could appreciate and will be shared for years to come.

Rose will now join her beloved daughter Vicki who has watched over the family from heaven since 1996, and her dear husband Ed whom she shared 59 years of married life with before he left us in 2005. She is also preceded in death by her parents, her sister Gloria (George deceased) Bell and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her devoted daughters: Sandy (John) Dean, Barbara (Mike) Turner, and Kathi (John) O’Donnell; son-in-law Tom (Kathy) Boseo; Cherished grandchildren: Kim (Tom) Fitzgerald, Jennifer (Dave) Lepper, Eric (Sarah) Dean, Michael (Courtney) Turner, Ashlee (Tim) Veleker, Loryl (Kirk) Bedinger, Matthew (Brie) Boseo, Jessica Boseo, Heather (Maria Kedzior) McClintock, Jack O’Donnell, and Connor O’Donnell;  Treasured  great-grandchildren: Alex (Ani Mauger) Gaughan, Abbey, Halle, Thomas & Lizzie  Fitzgerald, Sam, Max & Ben Lepper, Katelyn, Jonathan & Travis Dean, Drew & Bryce Turner, Ryan & Addie Veleker, Brooklyn & Briggs Bedinger and  Gianna & Miles Boseo;  Sisters: Dorothy (Herman deceased) Kabara, and Lois (Raymond deceased) Pirc. Rose is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
