Ruthie L. Poke

August 1, 1945 — September 6, 2021

Mother Ruthie L Poke, affectionately known as “Maw-Maw”, was born August 1, 1945 to Frank and Selena Griffin in Greenville, Mississippi.  The angels call her home on Monday, September 6, 2021.

Mother Poke met and married the “Love of Her Life”, Felix Poke on November 11, 1962. The family decided to relocate to Joliet, Illinois in 1963, after visiting with family members. They were blessed with three daughters and one son.

Mother Poke found employment with Scotty’s Restaurant, as a cook.

In 1967 she started employment with Uniroyal in Elwood until the company closed.

Ruthie worked for Cornerstone Services, Lead Supervisor, retiring after over thirty years of service.

Mother Poke was an excellent cook.  She was all about family. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her most enjoyable times were gathering with family to watch her favorite sport – Football!   Ruthie’s favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, where she enjoyed cooking all of her famous dishes. She enjoyed traveling, especially cruises! Ruthie was an avid shopper!

Mother Poke was baptized in Jesus Name and received the Holy Ghost at Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church, In 1984, under the leadership of Bishop J.E. Moore.  Being a faithful member of the church, enjoying Sunday School and being on the Mother’s Board.

Mother Poke was a true friend, confidant and mother too many, giving sound advice, whenever needed.  A Praying woman of God! Shared Godly wisdom, prayed continually for her family and friends.

Mother Poke was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Selena Griffin; one brother, Joe Willie (Mae B), three sisters, Emma Lou Griffin, Frankie Taylor and Elizabeth Robinson. Special Friend, JoAnn Martin.

Mother Poke leaves to cherish and honor her life: Husband of 59 years, Felix.  Three daughters: Sandra Poke, Debra (Keith) Hall, Monique Poke. One son: Felix Poke, Jr.

Grandchildren: Derrick Poke, Corvelle Johnson, Dominique Banks, Ryan Banks, Cierra Poke, Kaitlyn Poke, Jordynn Poke, Tyler Poke and Kinsley Poke.

Great-grandchildren:  Janae Poke, Bria Poke, Lanea Johnson, Carlie Green, Caliyah Johnson,

Cali Johnson, and Korra Cruickshank

Two sisters: Sister Mary (Deacon Harvey) Moffett, Brandon, Ms. And Minister Nancy (Pastor Robert) Blackmon, Pattison, TX.

Special Niece: Arnita Griffin, Champaign, IL.

Lifelong Friends for over 50 years: Sister Corine Pitchford.  And a host of other relatives, Church family and friends.

Mother Poke will be missed by many, loved by all!

A visitation will be held on Monday, September 13, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church, 212 Richards Street in Joliet. Intement will follow and Ruthie will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Joliet.
